Bendigo; Past, Present & Future
Bendigo is the fourth-most populous city in Victoria, with a little over 120,000 residents calling it home. Located in the Bendigo Valley which is in the geographical center of Victoria, Bendigo is situated approximately 150km northwest of the state capital, Melbourne.

The traditional owners of the land, waterways, and sky in the Bendigo region are the Dja Dja Wurrung (pronounced Ja-Ja-war-rung). They are also known as the Djaara or Jajowrong people and the Loddon River tribe.

In 1851, an exciting discovery of gold on Bendigo Creek led the way for a transformation from a humble sheep station into one of colonial Australia’s largest boomtowns. The Victorian gold rush intensified, bringing a huge influx of international migrants, particularly from Europe and China.

Bendigo, officially named Sandhurst between 1853 and 1891, became the largest gold-mining economy of the 19th century, and the wealth it generated is reflected in the Victorian architectural heritage which can be seen around the city.
